Cloud 2.0: Are We There Yet?

"Cloud computing is still partly hype, part reality. Broken down into its constituent parts (SaaS, PaaS, IaaS) it is a pragmatic strategy with a history of success. But the concept of “the cloud” still has some executives scratching their heads over what’s real, what’s exactly new about it, and how it fits into their IT plans. Is it time to move to Cloud 2.0?" What's the SLA on Cloud?

"Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are the foundation of any commercially viable cloud computing provider. Listed here are five SLA topics to address when selecting a cloud service provider." Read more at Tech Journal South.

Private Cloud Gaining Traction

"Despite popular belief, so-called "cloud computing" does not always involve putting your systems out on the open Internet for the world to see. In fact, the "private cloud" is gaining more and more traction as cloud computing matures. What is a private cloud?" Read more here.

Security of Cloud Computing Users: A Study of U.S. and Europe IT Practitioners - CA

"CA and the Ponemon Institute conducted a cloud security survey of U.S. and Europe IT and IT security professionals. The findings show that about half of the respondents don’t believe the organization has thoroughly vetted cloud services for security risks prior to deployment. What CIOs Need to Know About Integration

Cloud Computing has a lot of promise. Your corporate data center, on-premise infrastructure, mobile workforce, and outsourced IT services all have to managed and integrated into one environment. That's where the rubber meets the road. CIO.com has an article about integration.

What is IAAS?

What is IAAS? It is Infrastructure as a Service. Cloud.com launched a scalable IAAS service offering. By definition, IAAS needs to be scalable. The same with any Virtualization service. Why? Because the customer is expecting these services - anything in the Cloud - to grow on demand for them.

IAAS is when your Managed Service Provider, like Host.Net, provides all of the computing hardware - the platform if you will - for your software applications (like office suites, CRM, ERP, EMR, et al) to reside on for global access. It has also been called Platform as a Service (PAAS).

Bottom line: as Host.Net explains, IAAS and PAAS means that you (the customer) can deliver apps but get out of the data center business. Host.Net further explains that they take you out of the hardware business!

Public, Private or Hybrid Cloud?

Public, Private, or Hybrid Cloud? How do you choose? In this article on TechJournalSouth, the author briefly explains 3 models of cloud computing - private, public or a hybrid.

"The bottom line is this: The cloud model you choose depends on your business requirements and how you can effectively balance the four main decision drivers: risk, cost, timing and resources. If you are not sure what makes the most sense for your business, contact a service provider like [Host.Net] for help in finding the right solution — one that fits your organization’s unique requirements." Cloud Expo Summary

Here's one attendees perspective on the CloudExpo in NYC: click here.

Two key observations:

One; "In general, attendees have moved from being there to learn what cloud is to learning how they can use it in their business."

Two, "“Cloud Security” is still an oxymoron. No big surprise here. Customers know they want it, vendors and software companies say they have it, and few are getting or delivering anything close. I pointed so many people to the Cloud Security Alliance and CloudAudit projects that I’m actually tired of talking about them. There were a number of booths that said something like “We are the cloud security experts” – and from talking to them, there wasn’t a single person at the booth that could tell me why they were ‘experts’"
